KAZAKHSTAN. Almaty. January 2022. Dauren Dostiyarov, political activist, was detained on the evening of January 4th and tortured by police until his release on the 13th. His brother, Abzal Dostiyarov, shows bruises on Dauren's body.
He said; ‘For me, the most terrible torment was when they removed my hands behind my back, put my face to the wall, spread my legs, and kicked me more than 10 times in the groin area, saying that I was a rebel, an extremist, and that I should not have descendants, for the sake of we will try this.
Then they made me stand in this position for several hours (squat). I already had swollen legs, but they did not allow me to move, and if I did, they beat me again.’
225 people were killed (including soldiers and police officers) and 4,578 wounded; nearly 12,000 people have been detained in Kazakhstan in massive riots across the country, according to authorities.
