TURKEY. Akcakale. October 2019. A man sits, desperate and in shock as mortars fall in several locations in Akcakale. At least 20 people were wounded in shelling in the town as fighting rages a day after Turkey launched a military operation against Kurdish forces in northern Syria.
Turkey has vowed to destroy the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which control much of northeastern Syria, and to create a "safe zone" for the return of Syrian refugees.
