Peter van Agtmael
USA. Washington, DC. 2017. A gown fitting before the Ms. Veteran America competition. Marissa Strock lost both of her legs to an IED blast south of Baghdad that killed two others in her Humvee. After her photograph appeared on the cover of Newsweek, she said, “A lot of people I didn’t even know found me through MySpace, and others started calling and messaging me. They all acted like they were my best friends . . . I wanted to support other wounded soldiers, and it was a good story that needed to be told, but I didn’t want to appear as a victim.”
