G.B. WALES. Llanystumdwy. Jan MORRIS, writer, photographed (she says this is her favorite picture of herself) on the island where she says she will be buried. As a staff reporter, for the Times, he was seconded to John Hunt's 1953 Everest expedition, he claimed one of the century's greatest scoops, announcing that the mountain had finally been conquered on Coronation Day 1953.
Venice (1960), an in-depth study of one of his favourite cities, followed by The Presence of Spain (1964) and Oxford (1965), which really established Morris as a major 20th century travel writer.Ê
The Pax Britannica trilogy(1973-78) brought Morris much literary acclaim. His unique writing style here seems to combine the nose of the journalist, the scholarliness of the historian, and the eye and sensibility of the travel writer.
Between 1964 and 1972, Morris was undergoing a sex-change. This, is described in her autobiographical, Conundrum (1974), 1986.
