Qatar. Doha. Al Shahaniyah. Camel racing, for which Qataris have exceptionally high regard and appreciation. It highlights Qatar‟s popular heritage and conserves authentic Arabic traditions. Camel race dates begin in October but preparations are all year round.
Camel races started in Qatar in 1972 under the motivating patronage of H.H the Emir. There are two breeds of camels in Qatar; one is the Qatari/Omani and the other is the Sudanese. Races were moved to the larger racetrack at Al Shahaniyah. Races on Al Shahaniyah track started in 1990.
Practise race, where young camels have a 'Robot' fitted to their backs, which can operate a whip controlled by the owner in his car running parallel to the track. The use of small children was banned by the UAE in 2002, where it is now illegal to race at a weight under 45kg and 15 years of age.
