Jordan Matson, 28, an American foreign fighter aligned with the Kurdish YPG militia, rests at a safe house in the front line town of Tel Tamer, in Kurdish-controlled north-eastern Syria, a region that the Kurds call Rojava. Matson, a native of Wisconsin, worked in the food packing industry before leaving the United Sates to join the YPG in their fight agains the Islamic State. He is the founder of the "Lions of Rojava" webpage, a vehicle to recruit foreign fighters to join the ranks of the YPG.
