UKRAINE. Serebrianka, Crimea. 2006. A Crimean Tatar ceremony in memorial of a deceased man 100 days after he passed away. A mullah leads prayers for a group of men while the women participate in an adjacent room. About 250,000 Crimean Tatars, a Turkic group of Sunni Muslims, have returned to their homeland since the fall of the Soviet Union. Their families had been deported to Uzbekistan by Stalin, who wrongfully accused them of collaborating with the Nazis.
