UKRAINE. Uzkut, Crimea. 2006. A woman uses the floor of the abandoned school where she and other Crimean Tatar families are squatting to prepare large quantities of baklava to sell to tourists vacationing on the Black Sea. Crimean Tatars, a Turkic group of Sunni Muslims, have returned to their homeland since the fall of the Soviet Union. Their families had been deported to Uzbekistan by Stalin, who wrongfully accused them of collaborating with the Nazis.
