Harry Gruyaert
Belgium. Brussels. Molenbeek. 1975.The finish of stage 1a of the Tour de France. The first stages were really fast and the race split to pieces, with Eddy Merckx being the main protagonist. The race would eventually be won by Bernard Thévenet amid some controversy, Eddy Merckx was punched in the kidneys on stage 14 and fell on stage 17 breaking a cheek bone and Thévenet took over the lead. It’s said that Merckx only finished the race to enable him to earn the prize money for second place to share with his team mates as is the custom in bike racing.
