MONGOLIA. Ulaanbaatar. 2010. Professional shamans from Ulaan Bataar bring their students to the countryside to speak with their ancestor spirits for the first time. They set up gers inside a sacred area whose perimeter they marked with string and begin the long series of rituals and sacrifices that will last the whole weekend. The new shamans enter a trance and begin to speak with their ancestor spirits for the first time, with family members giving support. Families have long been detached from their ancestors because shamanism was suppressed for so long, so the process of reconnecting is trying. The spirits come and go quickly, sometimes leaving the student passed out.
