EL SALVADOR. Chalatenango. 17 September, 2018. Two incarcerated members of the MS13 gang talk in their sleeping quarters inside the Chalatenango prison in El Salvador, one of the prisons in El Salvador where the "Yo Cambio" (I Change) program of gang rehabilitation is being implemented. According to a 2016 human rights report, overcrowding in prisons such in Chalatenango, remained a serious threat to prisoners’ health and lives. At the same time, most prisons, including Chalatenango, are subscribing to the Yo Cambio (I Change) Program, which teaches prisoners skills like carpentry so that when released, they will be better equipped to find jobs. Because many inmates have had only a few years of schooling, most prisons, in collaboration with the Department of Education, provide primary and secondary classes to compensate for lost opportunities. Drug and alcohol abuse, conflict and problem resolution, and values programs are obligatory.
