Stephen Allwine, a church elder from Cottage Grove, wanted to end his marriage but his congregation frowned upon divorce. In early 2016, he used the dark web to find a hit-man to kill his wife. Allwine sent $12,000 in Bitcoin to an operation called “Besa Mafia” but he was duped - it was a scam. Later that year he murdered his wife and tried to stage it as a suicide. In early 2018 Allwine was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
