IRAQ. Khanke. 2019. -- Subha, 35, and the hands of her children, Fahad, 15, Fahdi, 13, Linda, 10, Liza, 7 and Salam, 5. They were captured by ISIS in 2014, and held as slaves, until they escaped the fighting in Baghouz in the past few days, after their ISIS captors disappeared as coalition allied Syrian Democratic Forces closed in. Fahad, who’d been trained as an ISIS fighter, led the way to safety, with the family walking for several hours through the front lines. In his time with ISIS, he was injured by mortarfire in the neck, and needed surgery to remove some of the shrapnel. They are recovering from their flight in the home of an uncle at (Kabarto 2) camp outside Dohuk.
