Iraq. Bashiqa. 2017. A Yazidi boy in Bashiqa, a small town on the outskirts of Mosul recently liberated from ISIS. The Yazidis are a Kurdish minority that had resisted Islam. Though their religion shares elements of other Abrahamic traditions, their central deity known as the Peacock Angel is interpreted in Islam as representing Satan, and they have often been mistrusted as devil worshippers. Their territory in northern Iraq had been relatively insulated from the fighting that dominated many other parts of the country, but when ISIS invaded, the Yazidis became targets. Thousands were killed, and hundreds of young women and girls were kidnapped and forced into sex slavery.
