SRI LANKA. Mullaitivu. January, 2018. Tamil fishermen on the beach in the town of Mullaitivu, northern Sri Lanka. Mullaitivu, a fishing town in north-eastern Sri Lanka, was the last LTTE stronghold and the that was one of the last LTTE-controlled areas, with the theatre of many battles fought since 1983 in the Sri Lankan Civil War against the Tamil Tigers. The Sri Lankan Army took control of the town on January 25, 2009, in the Battle of Mullaitivu, marking the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka. Thousands of Tamils from this area remain missing since the end of the war.
