GB. England. Wiltshire. Salisbury. Salisbury Cathedral. Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival. This year's programme running from 27 May to 11 June 2016 is focused on the arts and culture of New Zealand. Maoris at the opening ceremony perform their powhiri. This is a ritual to welcome strangers on to Maori lands, although for this ceremony, it was turned on its head and performed to welcome the Maoris on to Salisbury Cathedral lands. The Maoris long and rich tradition of speech and collective singing, called waiata, begins events of all kinds from concerts to receptions and at this Opening Ceremony for the Arts Festival songs were performed a capella by the visiting group of Maoris. Here a Maori in traditional dress complete with feathered head dress and facial tattoos sticks his tongue out in a display of warrior fierceness but isn't taken seriously by a member of the audience. 2016
