CHINA. Guangzhou, Guangdong, 1993. In the early 1990's, believing they could become rich in Guangzhou or the Pearl River Delta, over 300,000 people a day got off the train in Guangzhou. Most of them came from the agricultural areas of Sichuan and Hunan provinces. During the Chinese New Year, the workers would return home with the money they saved during the year (not a large sum, for most of them). But buying a ticket to return home for the New Year is not an easy undertaking.
