Elliott Erwitt
SCOTLAND. 2011. 107 Nelson Monument, as seen from outside the Old Royal High School, Calton Hill, Edinburgh. Constructed in memory of Admiral Lord Nelson, who died victorious over the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar. A time ball was added to the monument in 1852 to help sailors discern the exact time when working out longitude. Ships' captains could set their chronometers when the ball was dropped at one o'clock. On foggy days, however, they couldn't see the signal, so in 1861 the one o'clock gun was introduced. Inside the monument you can read a copy of Nelson's last letter to his love, Lady Hamilton.
