MEXICO, Tijuana. 2006. La Casa del Migrante (House of the Migrant) shelters 180 males 18 years of age or older for up to 15 days. The faith-based home run by a Catholic priest was founded in Tijuana in 1987. Between then and 2004, 141,000 men who have come north from Central America, South America and Mexico and have often run out of money, wait to attempt an illegal border crossing. Others who have been deported back to Mexico have found temporary shelter here. There are six similar shelters run by the Scalabrini Missionaries and volunteers from Guatemala City to Chicago, Illinois. The migrants are given meals, healthcare, haircuts, showers, spiritual guidance and a dormitory bed. The main fear of the migrants is the violence they encounter at the hands of border guards and vigilantes.
