MEXICO. Tijuana. 2006. At Tijuana Beach, the wall that separates the US from Mexico is rubber coated steel track driven vertically into sand and Pacific Ocean. There are some gaps in the wall wide enough for humans to pass through. On the US side the beach is under surveillance by parked Border Patrol vehicles, sensors, spotlights and helicopters. Heavy surveillance has driven many migrants to attempt mountains and desert crossings where many die of exposure and dehydration, are vulnerable to wild animals and vipers, or may be attacked by vigilante groups once on the US side. Here, teenage Mexican girls visit the wall which is a local tourist site.
