MEXICO. Tijuana. 2006. Dining room chairs on tables at La Casa del Migrante (House of the Migrant), which shelters 180 males 18 years of age or older for up to 15 days. The faith-based home, run by a Catholic priest, was founded in Tijuana in 1987. Between then and 2004, 141,000 men have found shelter within its walls. Men from Central America, South America and Mexico have run out of money as they wait to attempt an illegal border crossing. Others here have been deported back to Mexico. The migrants are given meals, healthcare, haircuts, showers, spiritual guidance and a dormitory bed. Six similar shelters between Guatemala City and Chicago, Illinois, also run by the Scalabrini Missionaries, attempt to give rest to hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants.
