MEXICO, Tijuana. 2006. Migrant men receive haircuts at La Casa del Migrante (House of the Migrant), which shelters 180 males 18 years of age or older for up to 15 days. The faith-based shelter was founded in Tijuana in 1987. Between then and 2004, 141,000 men have found shelter within its walls. They have come north from Central America, South America and throughout Mexico and have run out of money as they wait to attempt an illegal border crossing. Others have been caught and deported back to Mexico. The migrants are given meals, healthcare, haircuts, showers, spiritual guidance and a dormitory bed for up to 15 days. Six similar shelters stretched between Guatemala City and Chicago USA, also run by the Scalabrini Missionaries, attempt to give rest to the hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants. This house is run by a Catholic priest plus a number of volunteers. The main fear of the migrants is the violence they may encounter at the hands of border guards and vigilantes.
