Odinga, who raced against incumbent Kibaki in the contested presidential elections is a Luo, while Kibaki is a Kikuyu. Odinga was according to polls in the lead until the elections, and commands widespread support among Nairobi's outlying slum areas. In Kibera widespread violence against local Kikuyus ensued.
