ICELAND. Reydarfjordur. 2007. The town of Reydarfjordur, in east Iceland. It is home base to the Fjardaal aluminium smelter which is located a few kilometers further out the coast. The project is controversial, as it is powered by the embattled Karahnjukar hydroelectric power station. Alcoa is the world's leading producer of primary and fabricated aluminium. Bechtel was selected by Alcoa to engineer, design, and construct the Fjardaal aluminum smelter.
