CHINA. Yunnan province. 2009. Mingyong Glacier, the fastest retreating glacier in China. It has receded about 1km in the last 10 years. At the viewing platform over the glacier, tourists pose for snaps in front of the glacier. The glacier is a big tourist draw, as it is located on the holy Mt. Kawagebo, a site of pilgrimage for Buddhists. The glacier has a dirty and dark look from the rapid melting, which is causing sediments to be deposited on the sinking surface of the glacier.
