AUSTRALIA. White Cliffs. 2009. The family of Donna-Lee and Ron WYNEN and their two children. Ron has been an opal miner here for three decades. The family, like most others in this town, live underground in converted mine shafts, as the temperature outside gets up to 45 degrees celcius. Inside it is a constant low 20s. Most of the mining here is done by individuals or family businesses, and the hills are pocketed with thousands of mine shafts that are dug into the soft rock.
