SENEGAL. Kaolack. Sheikh Hassan Cissé (sitting in middle armchair) is the Friday prayer imam of Kaolack, an important center of the Sufi sect of Tidjane. He has studied at the Al Azhar University of Cairo and in the U.S. where he regularly travels as well as to Britain for conferences on Islam. He is deferentially called the "American Marabout" by his followers whom he treats to a lavish lunch in his home. The two women are American Muslims. 1988.
