A century ago many Chinese left this region to work in the United States on the building of the intercontinental railroad. Those who later returned to their homeland from California brought with them orange plants which are now grown in this part of China. This event also serves to encourage local investments and economic fundings from "overseas Chinese". During the old regime these Chinese were considered as undesirable, and were often frowned upon, but in the present regime every attempt is made to encourage them to come back.
