Harry Gruyaert
BELGIUM. Province of Hainaut. Town of La Louviere. During the "Gilles" carnival. Annual event since the 15th century, beginning 49 days before Easter, in the towns of Binche and La Louvière. The "Gilles", wearing the traditionnal hats made with ostrich feathers, walk through the town to celebrate the spring revival. Those without "Gilles" costumes wear different ones ( harlequin, Pierrot,...) to award away evil spirits. 1975.
