A view of Ulm on the Rhine, as seen from the belfry of the Gothic cathedral. It is the religious building with the highest tower in Europe and it took nearly 200 years to build it (1377-1533).This place on the river has been settled since the early Stone Age by Celts, Alemanic and Frankish tribes. In 1274 Rudolf of Habsburg declared the city to be subject to the emporor only. In the Middle Ages trade flourished, followed by destruction during religious wars, by stagnation and cessation once to Bavaria, then to Wurttemberg. Now Regensburg is again a Bavarian city, the Medieval architecture, irreparably destroyed by the bombs of the Second World War, has been replaced by modern structures.
