Hiroji Kubota
INDONESIA. Wamena, Irian Jaya (New Guinea). 1996. A double prop DC-9 takes about nine hours to fly from Jakarta to Jayapura, the capital of Irian Jaya Province. The place stops at three other cities along the way. Another hour's flight south from Jayapura aboard a propeller cargo plane takes you to Baliem Valley and Wamena, a city almost totally surrounded by 4,000-meter mountains that rise in the background. Wamena is the main area where the Dani tribe lives. American missionaries were quite active in this area, and most members of the tribe are Christians.
