Larry Towell
Perquin, Morazan. 1991. Government soldier in cemetery in Perquin, one of the guerilla capitals of El Salvador during the war. Occasionally government forces would invade the guerilla strongholds to "show who was in charge." The guerillas would simply evade the soldiers and lead them on wild goose chases through the mountains. When the government soldiers would leave town, the guerillas would come back down from the mountains. In the meantime, the civilians in town, who traditionally supported the guerillas, were left to deal with the company of soldiers. (El Salvador, page 74)
