HAITI. Plaine du Nord. 2000. At Bassin Saint Jacques, a goat is about to be
sacrificed to the loa (spirit) Ogoun. Both beast and voodoo executionner are covered with the mud of the sacred pond.
The magic of voodoo is very much alive in Haiti today, five centuries after it was introduced by the slaves, and 200 years after it helped african tribes unite against the French colonists in their fight for independence.
This cult, dedicated to the spirits of nature as well as those of the ancestors, houses many rituals.
