FRANCE. Lyon. September 30th, 1994. France's Moslem population rejoiced at the opening today in the City of Lyon of a large new Mosque to serve 2500 faithful of this city. Built on an area of 8000 square meters supplied by the Municipality, it cost over 29 million francs to build (a large share donated by the Saudi Arabian government). Lyon's agglomeration has over 120.000 Moslem inhabitants. Previously, the City had only 4 modest Mosques. Appointed as spiritual leader of the mosque is Imam Abdelhamid Chirane, the Grand Mufti.
