The rocky wilderness in the heart of the drought area near Tumgoan, old men and women, about 400 of them, sit in the hot afternoon sun breaking rocks. Nearby sit or lie the lame, half blind, these people are working on road relief programme and are paid one rupee a day for the men and 12 annas a day for the women.The anna is worth about 75 pice, 100 pice to the rupee, rice costs 12 annas a kilo, the cheapest grain 9 annas a kilo.The old people used to rice, cannot digest jowar.The last great drought in this area was in 1901.
