After World War I, the Bridge across the Jordan River linking Israel to Jordan, was named the ALLENBY BRIDGE after the General Allenby the Commander of the British forces who conquered the country from the Turks.In the SIX DAY WAR it was blown up and destroyed, and in its place a tempory Bailey bridge was put up whichj to this day served to cross the border between Israel and Jordan.In the summer of 1967 the bridge was a major crossing for refugees living on the West Bank to fled back to Jordan, and for inhabitants returning under the family reunification progeramme. 1968
