Water for Desert.
The overall system will utilise all water sources, local and regional. Its main task will be to carry water from the North where it is plentiful and where land reserves are limited, to the South where the opposite is the case. Its major objectives are a vast increase in the country's irrigated area, and reclamation of large parts of the Negev Desert. The total area under irrigation will be increased eightfold, to a total of four million dunams (the dunam is 1000 square meteres), the irrigation area has already been increased from 230.000 to 550.000 dunams since 1949.
