CUBA. Havana. 1997. A nun of the Daughters of Charity and a lay nurse attend to the handicapped in the institution of the Edad de Oro (The Golden Age), Havana, Cuba 1997. Since the revolution, all christian charities are run by the State.
After three decades of official atheism the communist state, weakened by the failure of its marxist economy, can no longer enforce anti-religious ideology. The Catholic Church, which was mostly silent under communism, takes advantage of the present religious liberalism: many Cubans mix Christianity with "santeria"-pagan rituals from Africa.
