WEST BANK. Hebron. 1997. Palestinians wait in line to apply for jobs as new Palestinian policeman in the front of Palestinian Authority police station days after it was evacuated by the Israely army. The Israelis had used it as their post during the total occupation of Hebron. Before leaving, the Israelis stripped it of everything including telephones, some wiring and electrical service. Palestinian flags hung on strings throughout the city in anticipation of an independent Palestinian state. The Israeli settlements of Tel Rumeida, Beit Hadassah and Avraham Avinu remain in town. The continued presence of the settlements are the justification for the lasting Israeli partial occupation of Hebron and its sporatic closures. The Palestinian police are powerless to protect Palestinians against settlers or the Israeli military.
