NEPAL. Bhaktapur. 1998. Bhaktapur, Nepal's ancient capital, is about 10 kilometers east of downtown Kathmandu. Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan-a city bordering on Kathmandu-have been designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. All three have central squares named Durbar in their old city centers. Narrow streets encircle the squares, spreading out net-like. Almost all the homes here are two or three-story brick houses. They characteristically have small wood-framed windows on the second and third floors. One morning passing through this area I came upon a group of men butchering their water buffalo for meat that day.
