MYANMAR (Burma). Pagan. 1986. For about two hundred years from the middle of the eleventh century, the Pagan Dynasty ruled this country and enjoyed greatly prosperity. During those two centuries, about thirteen thousand Buddhist pagodas and stupas were build along the banks of the Irrawaddy River in the Pagan area. Hundreds of splendid structures from that period are extant to this day. In fact, "Ankor" in the Cambodia and the structures in Pagan comprise two of the finest sets of cultural assets in all of Southeast Asia. People living in the Pagan area, however, are poor. They cultivate small plots of arable land and raise mountain sheep. Because of insufficient capital, they are unable to use water from the great Irrawaddy for irrigation.
