EAST GERMANY. 1989. East German police checking papers for re-entrance into East Berlin.
The Two Sides of the Wall, as more and more openings have been created in the Berlin Wall since the decision of the East German government to allow free access between East and West Germany, millions of East Germans have flooded across into West Berlin.Post offices were crowded as visitors from the East lined up to receive their 100 Deutsch marks isssued by the West German government before heading for the shops. The East German authorities had won their gamble that most of the East Germans crossing the border would return to their homeland. The majority seemed happy enough to file home with their shopping bags full.
