MEXICO. Aguas Calientes, Laconda Jungle, Chiapas. 1995. A Mexican soldier walks through the benches built by the Zapatistas for the National Democratic Convention (CND) held in August 1994. It was an assembly of labour unions, university professors, youth, intellectuals, progressive organizations and political parties. Six thousand persons were in attendance. The gathering was organized by the Zapatistas with Commandante MARCOS as the main speaker. Shortly after this photo was taken in mid-February, and after the press had left the once Zapatista-controlled area, the Mexican army tore up and burned down the benches as a symbol of government control. The Zapatistas had fought a symbolic war, and these grounds proved to be too strong a symbol for the army to leave intact. ©Larry Towell/Magnum Photos
