ISRAEL. Jerusalem. Via Dolorosa. 2000. Pilgrims carry symbolic crosses down the Via Dolorosa, the road on which Christ carried his cross through the walled city of Jerusalem on his way to Golgotha. The trek ends at the Sepulchre Church which was visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims during the two Holy weeks between the Roman and Orthodox Christmases. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre houses the stone on which Christ's body was washed, and a second stone from which he rose from the dead. It was visited by pilgrims of the Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Coptic, and Syrian Orthodox faiths for the christmas which was celebrated by the Orthodox faiths, on January 7. The Church is shared by shared by several denominations and orders, including the Roman Catholic Jesuits who celebrate Christmas on December 25. An estimated four million tourists and pilgrims visited the Holy Land for the millenium.
