SOUTH AFRICA. South African Elections. People of Sanderton at a political rally where Gen. Smuts is campaining for Prime Minister for the United Party. Malan eventually won (Nationalist Party) in 1948. This was the first election fought in South Africa largely on a racial issue. 1948
