Santa Marta, Cabanas. 1991. A mother and grandmother hold new twins in Santa Marta, the first village of repatriated refugees established in a conflictive zone in 1986. In the early years of the war, campesinos (rural peasant farmers) were massacred by the U.S.-trained and supplied Salvadorean army. They fled into Honduras where they lived in refugee camps. Some lived in camps inside San Salvador. Eventually, during the war, human rights and church organizations encouraged them and assisted them in returning to their places of origin. Returned refugees were heavily supportive of the FMLN guerillas throughout the war. The peace accords were signed in January 1992 ending 12 years of civil war. Poverty remained the cause and the visible symptom of the long war. (El Salvador, page 32-33) ©Larry Towell/Magnum Photos
