Raghu Rai
INDIA. Punjab. Amristsar. 1984. Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale is the most militant leader of the often bloody campaign for Sikh political power. Some even call him the Sikh Khomeini. He is seen here on the roof of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest of Sikh shrines which rises above the "sacred pool of nectar". It is in the center of the pool of the Harimandir where worshippers perform purification baths. This being a Holy shrine, Bhindranwale never leaves it as he might be arrested by the Indian authorities, who are now afraid to trespass inside the Golden Temple.
