George Rodger
A young Masai girl (N'Dito) dressed in beaded finery for a circumcision ceremony. The beadwork and decorations are made from buttons, seeds, cowrie shells and small triangles of tin. The N'ditos can be engaged from birth onwards to members of the Moran age grade with whom they live, and have sex, until they reach puberty. They then return to their mothers and go through a female circumcision (cliterectomy) ceremony similar to the boys whereby they enter the female age grade of "Sangigi" marriageable girls, after which they marry their warrior.
