Marilyn Silverstone
This is the wife of a labourer in Sirri Village who has two acres of land on which she grows paddy (rice), but this year there was no harvest at all.Her husband earns one rupee per day working on relief road work, the only job he has been able to find in the past 8 months. The family is reduced to eating "bassi", a thin gruel of rice and water with a tiny bit of red pepper added to give it some flavour. The mother eats this once a day, the children 2 a day.
This little boy has rickets, is puny and frail and undersized for his age.
