SOUTH AFRICA. Transkei. On the south coast of Africa is a territory known as "the land of the Red People; the name comes from the colour of the soil, from the reddish colour of the people's skin which is dusted with red clay, and from the russet red of the blankets which they wear. Officially called the Transkei (land across the River Kei), set aside as a nature reserve, but once a land of fierce tribal wars, and superstition and fear, until under the watchful eye of the Bhunga (native government), the warriors have been transformwed into farmers and cattle breeders without changing the social fabric of the two main tribes, the Xhosas and the Pondos. 1948.
